Below I’m sharing a tutorial for how to sew a simple half apron. You can whip up this half apron in less than an hour! I love making these for quick and easy gifts. If you are new to sewing, this is a great project to start with.

C.S. Lewis said “The homemaker has the ultimate career. All other careers exist for one purpose only…to support the ultimate career.”
Do you agree?
The apron is the homemaker’s uniform. I love homemaking. And I am happiest when wearing an apron. Here at home serving my family. Cooking and baking delicious foods. Tidying and decorating, creating a cozy atmosphere. Tending to the homestead animals. And growing a productive garden, for nourishment and for medicine.

This simple half apron is very quick to make. I have made several of these for myself. But these also make wonderful gifts. This past year I made one for my mother, who loves to bake sourdough bread, as well as one for my mother in-law, who enjoys trying out new recipes.
Not only is this a nice apron for cooks and bakers, but also for gardeners, homesteaders and crafters. I wear this apron when I am out in the garden or tending to the chickens. The large deep pockets are handy for storing things like seed packets, small garden harvests, gardening tools, and fresh laid eggs.

Tips for Sewing a Half Apron
- This pattern works best with a cotton or linen fabric
- Be sure to wash and dry your fabric prior to measuring and cutting your pieces
- Use a cotton thread that matches the main color in your fabric, or you can also choose to use a high contrast thread for a pop of color!
Tools
- Sewing Machine
- Fabric Scissors
- Pins
- Measuring Tape or Ruler
- Tailor’s Chalk (optional, I use it to mark my pieces before cutting)
- Iron
Materials
- 1.5 yards of 44″ wide fabric
- Matching (or contrasting) thread

How to Sew a Simple Half Apron
First lay out your fabric on a flat surface. Then Measure and cut your pieces. For this project you will need:
- One rectangle 28″ wide by 20″ long (this is the main body piece)
- One rectangle 20″ wide by 12″ long (this is the pocket piece)
- Two rectangles 5″ wide by 50″ long (these are the strap pieces)

How to Make the Strap Pieces:
To begin construction, I like to start with the strap pieces.
Firstly, take one of your strap pieces and fold the top of one of the narrow ends over to the wrong side a 1/2″. Next fold the strap in half lengthwise right sides together, wrong side facing out.
Then sew down the length with a 1/4″ seam.
Now use the “safety pin trick” to turn your strap piece right side out (see 3:14 in the video tutorial to watch me do this).

Next top stitch along the seam to get it to lay flat. Also top stitch the narrow end that was folded over. The other end can remain raw.
Repeat all of this with the second strap piece.

How to Make The Main Apron Body:
Now for the main apron body. Fold each side over to the wrong side a 1/2″, and then another 1/2″. Press with an iron.
Next sew a 1/2″ seam down each of the long sides. Do the same on the short sides, but stop 2.5″ from the top part of the apron. This is where the straps will go.
Now take one of your strap pieces. Tuck the raw end into the 2.5″ space. Fold the hem over the raw end, and then fold the strap piece over that and toward the outside of the apron (see 6:08 to watch me do this). Sew down the hem to secure the strap. Then top stitch to make the strap lay flat.
Repeat with the other strap.

How to Make The Pocket:
Just as we did with the main body piece, fold each side over a 1/2″, and then another 1/2″, to the wrong side. Then press with an iron.
Next top stitch down one of the long sides. This will be the top of the pocket.
Now center the pocket piece over the main apron body, right side to wrong side. Be sure to have the hemmed side of the pocket at the top. Then pin it in place.
Sew the two sides and the bottom of the pocket piece to the apron body.
Next find the center of your pocket. Sew straight down the center to create a division. Now you have two pockets.

I would love to hear from you in the comments if you make this apron! I have several other kinds of aprons that I like to make. If you would like to see a tutorial for those let me know.
If you try this tutorial and enjoy it, I would be so grateful if you could come back and give it five stars! And I love to see your pictures, so be sure to tag me on Instagram @verityfolkschool.
